Pea gravel is the material people mean to buy and then regret, because rounded stone never stops moving: it rolls under a shoe, pushes to the path edges and ends up in the lawn. Walkway Gravel is the crushed answer to the same job. It is 3/8 inch, a graded mix of stone sizes rather than a single screened size, and crushed rather than rounded. Those three details are the whole difference between a path that firms up underfoot and a path that sprays.
Reading the 3/8 inch spec before you commit to a path
Take the spec a piece at a time, because each part does something.
Crushed means angular faces. Angular pieces wedge against each other and stay wedged, so the surface tightens under foot traffic rather than loosening. Rounded stone cannot do this at any size.
A graded mix of sizes means smaller pieces occupy the gaps between larger ones, so there is less open space for a shoe to sink into. A single-size stone of the same nominal diameter stays loose no matter how long you walk on it.
Three-eighths of an inch is the size that suits feet. Larger stone is uncomfortable through a thin sole and awkward for a wheelbarrow or a stroller; much smaller and it tracks indoors on shoes. It is also small enough to fill the joints around flagstone and steppers cleanly.
What it does not do is bind. There is no stone dust in this grading, so it does not set up like a base mix. It compacts into a firm walkable surface and stays permeable, which is exactly right for a path and exactly wrong under a slab.
Where walkway gravel works on a Florida lot, and where it stops short
| Job | What is being asked of it | The call |
|---|---|---|
| Garden path or side path | Comfortable surface, drains after a storm | Fits. The job it is graded for. |
| Joints around flagstone or steppers | Fill gaps, keep sand and weeds out | Fits. Sweep it in and top up yearly. |
| Patio or courtyard border | Transition strip between hardscape and planting | Fits, at a shallow depth. |
| Xeriscape or rock garden bed | Ground cover that does not decompose | Fits, though larger decorative stone reads better in a feature bed. |
| Downspout splash area | Take the impact of concentrated roof water | Fits at the small scale, though a coarser stone holds up better under a heavy fall. |
| Shed or garage pad base | Carry a static load | Does not fit as the base. It is the topping over a compacted base, not the base itself. |
Sand underneath, storms overhead: the base question on a path
Everything on that list sits on Florida sand, and that is where paths fail. Loose sand offers very little bearing, so gravel spread straight onto it migrates downward, particularly on flatwoods ground that stays damp for weeks in the rainy season. A year on, the path looks thin and the stone is somewhere below the surface.
Two layers fix it. A compacted aggregate base, three to four inches for foot traffic, gives the gravel something firm to sit on. Landscape fabric between the base and the gravel keeps weeds down and stops the two layers interleaving. Then two inches of walkway gravel on top.
Keep the excavation shallow where the water table is high. A deep trench on a low lot fills with water and does nothing useful; a well shaped shallow section that sheds water sideways does. Edge restraint is not optional either, since summer storms move loose material off an unconfined path faster than feet ever will.
Ordering by the yard and clearing a spot the truck can back into
The gravel calculator takes feet for length and width, inches for depth, handles rectangles and circles and up to five areas, and adds five percent by default. Three hypothetical quantities at path depths:
- A xeriscape bed, 12 ft by 16 ft at 2 inches. 12 x 16 = 192 sq ft. 192 x (2/12) = 32 cubic feet. 32 / 27 = about 1.2 cubic yards.
- A topping course over a 10 ft by 12 ft shed pad at 2 inches. 10 x 12 = 120 sq ft. 120 x (2/12) = 20 cubic feet. 20 / 27 = about 0.75 cubic yards, over roughly 1.5 cubic yards of compacted base at 4 inches.
- A downspout splash area, 3 ft by 4 ft at 3 inches. 3 x 4 = 12 sq ft. 12 x 0.25 = 3 cubic feet, about 0.11 cubic yards. That is a bucket job, worth adding to a larger order rather than ordering alone.
This site publishes driveway and walkway gravel at about 2,800 lb per cubic yard, roughly 1.40 tons per yard, so the xeriscape bed is approximately 1.7 tons (1.2 x 1.40), the shed pad topping about 1.1 tons (0.75 x 1.40) and the splash area under a fifth of a ton. Run the totals through the gravel calculator for tonnage, then pick a quantity and a date on this page. Delivery is arranged at checkout by ZIP code and the truck needs a clear approach and a spot it can tip. Small stone spreads easily but travels in a downpour, so choose a tip spot on a hard surface away from a storm drain or a swale, and keep a tarp handy if the forecast turns.
