Limerock base carries the most weight here because it is the standard Florida base rock. It is also called limerock.

Shell rock is the compacting mix of limestone and shell used as sub-base under drives, pads and secondary roads, and it is best known in Southwest Florida. Around foundations, pools and downspouts, #57 stone is usually crushed limestone in Florida and is the drain stone most crews reach for. Where you need a firm, walkable path or a bed under pavers, limestone screenings are the crushed limestone fines that lock up underfoot.

The rest of the list fills in the gaps. 3/4" Crushed Stone works for drainage beds, drive surfacing and construction entrances. 3/8" Crushed Stone handles fine drainage, pipe bedding and topping over a compacted base. #67 Stone tops drives and handles concrete work at a slightly smaller size than #57. #4 Crushed Stone goes to heavy drainage, construction entrances and trench bottoms, while #8 Crushed Stone and #89 Crushed Stone cover fine drainage, concrete aggregate and paver joints. Ground and Climate Across Florida

An under-built base fails the same way everywhere in Florida: the sand moves, water sits, and the surface breaks up. What changes across the state is what the sand is sitting on and how fast water leaves. Florida base depth and drainage come down to soft sand, a high water table, summer storms and hurricanes, not frost.

In the North Florida clay hills and highlands, sandy or loamy topsoil sits over red or orange clayey subsoil on rolling hills, with wetter flatwoods and swamps on low ground along the rivers. Clay compacts more easily and drains more slowly than peninsula sand, and limestone lies close to the surface in some lowland pockets.

On much of the peninsula, the ground is deep quartz sand: loose and fast-draining on the inland ridges and coastal dunes, and flatwoods sand on the broad flats that sits wet for part of the year, often over a hardpan. Limestone lies buried beneath that sand.

Timing matters too. North Florida and the Panhandle get rain from winter fronts and summer thunderstorms, while the peninsula and South Florida run a distinct summer rainy season and a drier winter. Hurricane season runs June through November everywhere.

How to Order and Size a Load

Ordering online is the fastest path: pick the material, pick the quantity, and set the delivery. Material is sold by the ton or by the cubic yard, and the two are not the same number, so check which one the product is listed in before you compare loads.

For a rough check by hand, multiply length by width by depth in feet to get cubic feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. Depth is where most under-built jobs go wrong. A driveway over soft peninsula sand usually needs more compacted depth than the same drive over clay hills ground, because the sand moves under the load.
