Open the calculatorFlorida Rock Supply handles gravel and aggregate delivery in Horseshoe Beach, FL for two kinds of buyers: contractors who order by the truckload and homeowners who need one load for a path or a pad. Most jobs here start with limerock base. It is the crushed limestone graded down to fines that sets hard over our sandy ground, and it is the material local crews specify first.
Pathways and walkways on this sandy ground need materials that pack firm and drain.
Paths and walkways are where most of the fine material goes. Our ground is sand over limestone, so a path needs a surface that binds rather than one that stays loose and drifts.
Start with the base. Limerock Base, also called limerock or lime rock, compacts hard and gives a walkway a firm spine. Screenings go on top.
Stone Screenings are the fines buyers call limestone screenings or limerock screenings. Spread and watered in, they lock together into a firm, walkable crust. That is the surface most walkways here want.
For a path that stays loose and drains fast, Walkway Gravel is the finer, walkable option. 3/8" Natural Pea Gravel, or Natural Pea Gravel, suits short runs, borders and play areas.
Underneath, 3/8" Crushed Stone beds pipe and tight drainage runs. Coarser #57 Limestone, or #57 stone, handles french drains and drainage around foundations.
This is how most paths here go wrong. A path or drive goes down over bare sand with a base that is too thin, and the first hard summer storm cuts channels through it. The sand underneath never locked up, so the surface had nothing to sit on.
Our ground is sandy, deep on the ridges and thin in the lowlands, with limestone at or close to the surface across much of the zone. Rain on higher ground drains down through sand and porous limestone quickly, often into sinkholes rather than streams. Low flatwoods, swamps and the coastal marsh stay wet after heavy rain.
That is why base depth matters more than surface choice. Limerock base needs to go down thick enough to compact into a hard layer, and it needs to be crowned so water runs off instead of sitting. On a path, a thin layer of screenings over a compacted base is what holds up. Skip the base and you will be adding material every year.
Two more things shape the schedule. Storm surge works on the low, marshy Gulf shoreline, and sand washes off bare ground into low spots after downpours. Heavy rain or drought can open ground depressions that undermine a pad or drive. Work runs year round here, but summer brings frequent afternoon thunderstorms and hurricane season runs June through November, so cover bare base before a system arrives.
You can order online, and the first question is usually tons or yards. Limerock base and crushed stone are sold by the ton. Sand, topsoil and mulch are often easier to figure by the cubic yard. If you know your length, width and depth, either unit converts cleanly, so pick whichever you can picture and let the numbers do the rest.
To estimate, multiply length by width by depth in feet, then divide by 27 for cubic yards. For tonnage, a compacting material like limerock base runs heavier per yard than loose mulch, so do not assume one yard equals one ton across the board.
Bulk delivery drops a full load on your site, so have the spot clear and reachable. We deliver in Horseshoe Beach and across Dixie County, including Cross City and Old Town. A small load for a path is normal, and so is a multi-truck order for a drive.
Clear the drop spot and make sure the truck can reach it without overhead lines or soft ground in the way. Mark anything you do not want driven over. For a path, have your base depth measured and your edges staked so the driver can place the load close to where it will be spread. A tarp or cover helps if rain is coming.
Compacted limerock base is the standard here, because it sets hard over our sand and holds a level plane. Build it thick enough to lock up, crown it for drainage, then bed the pavers in limestone screenings. Screened sand or mason sand can work for the bedding layer, but the structural base under it should be limerock base.
Figure your square footage, settle on a depth, and let the quantity calculator turn that into tons or yards. Limerock base and limestone screenings cover most pathway jobs here, and we deliver across Horseshoe Beach and Dixie County. When your numbers are ready, place the order and we will get the load out to your site.
